The Project

A team of friends and artists in Brooklyn's queer community came together in 2006 to refocus the traditional girlie calendar through an all-female lens. Every Brooklyn Girls calendar features not impossible females but real live queer femmes you'd see around the neighborhood. The 2007 calendar paid homage to classic pinup girls of the past 12 decades. The 2008 calendar is our first swimsuit edition, bringing together an all-new group of local ladies at our favorite—and soon-to-be-torn-down—summer playland: Coney Island. This year, the Brooklyn Girls don swimsuits furnished by local designers and boutiques.

The I Heart Brooklyn Girls calendars not only show off the foxy, feisty femme contingent of one of Brooklyn's most vital communities, but also redress stereotypes of what pinup calendars—and lesbians—are about, both on and underneath the surface.

A portion of the proceeds of all Brooklyn Girls calendars are donated to organizations we support. For 2008, 10% goes to Coney Island USA, the resident not-for-profit arts organization, so that it may help keep the roots of Coney Island alive in the midst of change.
